Molly Wood arrives in a small western town to be the new schoolmarm. The Virginian, foreman on a local ranch, and Steve, his best friend, soon become rivals for her affection. Steve falls in with bad guys led by Trampas, and the Virginian catches him cattle-rustling. As foreman, he must give the order to hang his friend. Brigade stops at a staging post, where he saves the managers wife (Karen Steele) from an Indian attack, and enlists the help of two outlaws (Pernell Roberts, James Coburn) to continue his journey more safely. However, the Indian attacks persist, the outlaws plan to take Billy for themselves, tempted by the offer of amnesty for his captor, and Billys brother Frank (Lee Van Cleef) is in hot pursuit to rescue him.
