In San Francisco, Simon Dayton, the senior partner in a chemical company, visits famed detective James Lee Wong as Dayton fears for his life stemming from a series of unexplained events in both his personal and professional life. But before Wong can meet Dayton at his office the next morning to follow up, Dayton is found dead in his locked office, the cause eventually discovered to be by poison. Captain Sam Street with the SFPD leads the investigation. The primary suspect is Carl Roemer, the scientist who developed the poison which he accused Dayton of stealing from him as he was never paid for the formula. One of the initial questions is how Dayton was poisoned behind the locked doors of his office. While Street takes the path of least resistance in the investigation in believing Roemer the obvious killer based solely on circumstantial evidence, more thoughtful Wong takes a broader approach in trying not only to discover other suspects, but how whoever the killer was able to administer the poison. Two of those other primary suspects are Dayton's partners, Theodore Meisle and Christian Wilk, who stand to profit substantially from Dayton's death, in addition to Dayton, Meisle and Wilk's many employees and associates. Adding to the investigation is Street's sometime girlfriend, Myra Ross, who nonetheless respects Wong's take on the investigation more than Street's in looking out for the proverbial little guy. SFPD Detective Dan Grady's murdered body is pulled from San Francisco Harbor, the news hitting his friend and colleague Captain Bill Street hard. Assisting Street in the investigation is PI James Lee Wong, who Street believes may be able to provide his Asian expertise in Grady, working on his own, having been on a smuggling assignment, most goods into the harbor, where Grady seemed to have based his operation in having been found in a seaman's uniform, coming from East Asia. Also inserting herself into the investigation is Herald reporter Bobbie Logan, with who Street has a love/hate relationship, the hate in she being a thorn in his professional side in doing anything for the exclusive scoop. The investigation has two initial leads, one to Belden's Jewelers, Frank Belden who is close to going into receivership. The other is the Neptune Cafe, run by shady businessman Hardway Harry Locket. While the investigation goes full circle in there being a tie between Belden and Locket, the question Wong, Street and Logan have to answer is who pulled the proverbial trigger, the suspect list which extends to people in Belden and Locket's orbit. Edwards, a rich man who knows a curse was placed on the Eye by the Emperor Hong Chong Tu as he buried it in his dead unfaithful wife's heart, expects to be murdered for receiving it. He shows Mr Wong the Eye and a death threat note. At a party, during a game of Indications, Edwards is shot, seemingly by his secretary, Peter Harrison. Add a peeking Chinese butler and maid, a budding singer, another criminologist, Edwards' lawyer and an unsigned changed will. Watkins, the police commissioner, and G-Man James Andrews, Charlie works to expose an international opium-smuggling ring operating out of Shanghai. Billie Bronson secretes a package in the trunk of Charlie Chan aboard a New York-bound transatlantic liner. Chan and his number one son, Lee are met at the pier by Inspector Nelson and two rival reporters, Joan Wendall and Speed Patton. Billie, having left the country hurriedly a year ago when sought as a material witness in a political scandal, has returned to blow the lid off the town. She follows the Chans to their hotel and attempts to regain her package from the trunk, only to be interrupted by Lee. She then goes to the Hottentot Club, where candid-camera night is in full progress, followed by Lee. Already present are Joan and Speed. Billie is mysteriously murdered and Charlie is summoned from a police banquet in his honor. Present in the room with the body are club manager Johnny Burke; club dancer and Burke's girl-friend Marie Collins and the two reporters. While seeking a motive for the murder, a second killing is discovered in Charlie's hotel room, the package is missing from Charlie's trunk and it is realized that it must have contained her diary.
