In 1936, London chorus girl Julia Packett (Greer Garson) is always in trouble financially but also seems to land on her feet by using her feminine wiles to manipulate the men in her life with a smile on her, and usually their, faces. Much to her surprise, Julia receives an invitation to her now-grown daughter Susan Packett's (Dame Elizabeth Taylor) wedding to upper-crust Roderick Pennystone, to be held in the Packett mansion outside of Paris. Julia being a wife and mother is something of which her current social circle had no idea. Julia and her equally upper-crust husband William Sylvester Packett (Walter Pidgeon) met during World War I when he was enlisted and she a bright-eyed 17-year-old just starting out in the vaudeville business. They split--separated, but never divorced--because of their fundamental class and thus attitudinal differences, when Susan was an infant. Julia knew that it made sense to leave Susan with William because Julia's working life, which included late nights and often being on the move to where the work is located, would be no way to raise Susan. However, William's controlling mother, in the settlement, would not allow Julia any visitation rights, as such, Susan has never known her mother. Despite having no money for the trip nor appropriate wedding attire, Julia accepts the invitation, which Mrs. Packett (Lucile Watson), William, and Susan are surprised to receive as no one admits to sending Julia an invitation, her name not on the official invitation list. Julia's presence adds a spark to the proceedings as she is reunited with William and gets to know Susan for the first time, all of which is only complicated by her encounter with the Ghenoccio acrobatic troupe en route to Paris, strongman Fred Ghenoccio (Cesar Romero), who has fallen in love with her, and the presence of William's old friend, the wealthy Colonel Bruce (Willowbrook Nigel Bruce), known to his friends as Bunny. But Julia hopes that, based on her history and current circumstance with William, she has some influence on Susan, who she feels is marrying the wrong man; she thinks Ritchie Lorgan (Peter Lawford) , the Packetts' hired muralist, is the one Susan truly loves, if she will only recognize the fact. The beautiful Fanny can have any man that she wants to marry, but she sets her sights on Job Skeffington, the son of Russian-Jewish immigrants. Jobs wealth was self-made in finance. They met as Trippy was once employed by Job in his brokerage house. Fanny and Job, who is now aware of the Trellis financial straits, ultimately do get married, much to the consternation of Fannys many suitors, but most specifically to Trippy, who knows the reason why Fanny married him. Job also realizes that Fanny does not love him, but is unaware of the real reason she agreed to marry him. After their marriage, Fannys suitors are still around with more joining the ranks, which Job does not mind as he is aware that Fanny is not leading them on. But when the reason for Fanny marrying Job no longer exists, their relationship changes. They have to figure out what to do, which now takes into consideration their daughter, also named Fanny. Among the travelers of varied backgrounds that meet and interact one night at Union Depot, a metropolitan train station, are Chick and his friend Scrap Iron, both newly released from prison after serving time for vagrancy. Hungry and desperate for a break, Chick fortuitously comes across across a valise abandoned by a drunken traveler. In it he finds a shaving kit and a suit of clothes with a bankroll, which help transform the affable tramp into a dashing gent. After buying himself a meal, Chick seeks some female companionship among the many hustlers who walk the station. He propositions stranded, out-of-work showgirl Ruth Collins and takes her to the station's hotel. However, he quickly realizes she's not a streetwalker but another hard-luck victim of the Depression. Touched by her sincerity, he vows to help her buy a ticket to Salt Lake City, where a job awaits her. Scrap Iron is lucky too, stumbling across a wallet with a claim check discarded by a pickpocket. When Chick claims the violin case, he finds it filled with cash but doesn't realize that it's counterfeit.
