Joe is largely doing so in being attracted to Roberta, who initially rebuffs his advances but who eventually does succumb to them. What happens between the three of them is affected by how much Frank knows or believes he knows about what is going on between Joe and Roberta, and Joe's shady New York past catching up with him, part of that past which comes in the form of obsessive ex-girlfriend from Chicago, Ronnie.
