A Bank officer discovers a flaw in the U.S. extradition treaty with Brazil and decides to take advantage of it. On Friday, he steals a million dollars from the bank, knowing it won't be missed until the bank opens on the following Monday. He and his wife, who doesn't know what he has done, then take a flight to Brazil. After some difficulties, they get as far as New Orleans, where his wife discovers the reason for their flight and what he has done. She leaves him and returns home. The Secret Service of the US Treasury learns that a new batch of counterfeit bills has been in circulation using the plates that Tris Stewart, having completed three years of a ten year prison sentence, had used that led to his conviction. They are able to make a deal with Stewart, in consideration for early parole, to stage a mock escape so that he can help them locate the source of the counterfeit bills and hopefully recover the plates to shut down this counterfeit operation for good. In discovering that the plates had been sold by Stewart's deadbeat former partner Sam Hooker to one of their old associates, Jack Sylvester, Stewart may have other things on his mind, such as reconnecting with his old girlfriend, Meg Dixon, a nightclub cigarette girl who now goes by the professional name Laurie Fredericks, and together living off the proceeds that those plates and resulting counterfeit bills can provide. What happens with Stewart and Laurie will not only be affected by Sylvester and his handlers in the Secret Service, but also by the presence of Johnny Hackett, who, assumed to be a racketeer in the way he easily throws around money in the nightclub, has his eye on Laurie for himself. In San Francisco, successful self-made businessman Walter Williams has just bought three factories in Denver with the approval of the board of directors. Wanting to live in peace which means anonymity working in the welding trade that he learned inside, he finds he can't do so in his hometown of Norton City where he was imprisoned, where he would have liked to have lived, despite no family, in having any sort of touchstone to familiarity. He ends up going to New York City instead. Searching for any sort of human connection, he meets Cathy Higgins (Ruth Roman) - she more casually referred to as Cay - a taxi dancer, who knows how to play the game at the dance hall. Stemming from an incident involving both of them, they decide to go on the run, despite the police not knowing anything about their involvement in that incident, and Cay not knowing anything about his past until they being on the lam. Counting in part on his naiveté, Cay plays him for a chump, specifically about what happened that led to them running. In trying to eke out a life together on the straight and narrow albeit using assumed names, they end up forming that human connection that Bill needs so much. The question then becomes what happens if their shared past concerning that incident in New York City and/or Bill's past history as a convicted murderer catches up with them, perceived or real.
