The crew of submarine H.M.S. Sea Tiger have their leave (and assorted family problems) cut short when they are recalled for a special mission: sink the new German battleship Brandenburg. En route, they learn that their target has entered the heavily defended Baltic. Rather than fail, they follow it. Tension builds as they approach their target. While they are there, they spot a large number of tanks and realize that Army intelligence must be informed or some Tommies are going to be in for a nasty surprise. This movie centers around Pilot Officer Peter Penrose (Sir John Mills), fresh out of a training unit, who joins the squadron and experiences life during wartime. He falls for Iris Winterton (Renée Asherson), a young girl who lives at the local hotel, but he becomes disillusioned about marriage when the squadron commander dies in a raid, leaving his wife, the hotel manager, to bring up their young son alone.
