Gomer Pyle was a sweet but not-too-smart U.S. Marine from Mayberry, North Carolina who was stationed at Camp Henderson near Los Angeles, California. Gomer's innocence, naivete, and low-key demeanor often got him into trouble, most frequently at the hands of his loud-mouthed superior, Sergeant Carter. Colonel Hogan leads a ragtag band of POW's caught behind German lines in this popular television comedy. The bumbling Germans give Hogan and his crew plenty of opportunities to sabotage their war efforts. Colonel Klink is more concerned with having everything run smoothly and avoiding any trouble with his superiors (especially anything that might result in his being reassigned and sent to the front) than with being tough on Hogan and his fellow prisoners. Barney Miller is the kind of cop wed all like to run into. He is always sensible. He maintains order over a squad room of detectives who gamble for a hobby, get hit on by anything in skirts, go to renaissance philosophy conventions for fun, and would really prefer to be writing. Hes brought out of retirement when his old nemesis turned the second best terrorist in the world, Major Vladakov (Tim Curry), takes over the island of San Moreno and starts building a nuclear launch silo on it. With help from his old crew and hindrances from Captain Wallace B. Binghampton (Dean Stockwell), who sank a cruise liner a while back, McHale tries to put Vladakov out of business. Pete Malloy is a seven year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department working out of the Rampart Division. Unfortunately, after his young partner is killed while investigating a warehouse robbery, Malloy is ready to hand in his resignation. However, on what was supposed to be his last night on the force, he is given the task of breaking in a young rookie officer named Jim Reed. After their first night on patrol, Malloy sees potential in the young rookie and decides to not resign after all, and the two begin a seven year partnership in which the two officers handled cases from the serious (murder, robbery, rape, and drug abuse) to the humorous (children getting caught in awkward situations and the odd husband getting kicked out of the house by his wife. The officers also worked various details from S.W.A.T., and even flew on helicopter patrol. Also, during the next seven years, Reed went from probationary to full fledged officer, and Malloy got promoted to the rank of officer three plus one, just one rank below Sergeant. Other officers that were seen working with Reed and Malloy were Seargent Mac MacDonald, cynical, by the book Officer Ed Wells, good-natured officer Jerry Woods and Lew Walters.
