This is a spin-off from the 1973 British television series Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads?, although it shares its title with the earlier series The Likely Lads, of which Whatever.. was the sequel. Terry is divorced from his German wife and has a Finnish girlfriend, Christina. At Thelma's suggestion they join her and Bob on a caravan holiday, but due to a mishap the men get separated from the women. Thelma mistakenly accuses Bob of infidelity, and their row is heard publicly as they are in a van with the PA still switched on. Bob and Terry then holiday without the girls in a hotel at Whitley Bay. They score with both the landlady and her daughter, but have to make a hurried trouserless exit. Terry decides to emigrate, and Bob joins him for a farewell drink on board his ship. However, Terry changes his mind at the last minute and disembarks - realising too late that Bob is still on board heading for Bahrain.

In 1927, Lord Meldrum is a wealthy widower who owns a rubber factory. He lives with his brother Teddy, mother-in-law Lady Lavender, and daughters Poppy and Cissy. Meldrum is having an affair with Lady Agatha, wife of his rival Sir Ralph. He is trying to persuade Teddy to marry socialite Madge Cartwright, but Teddy fancies servant girls more than the upper-class ladies, so he's reluctant to marry Madge. Poppy is a flapper who often flirts with servant James. She's very different from her sister Cissy in appearance as well as attitude. Cissy fancies women more than men, wears men's clothes, and is a member of the workers' movement and a workers' political party. Lady Lavender is extravagant, owns a parrot, and likes to throw food at servants. The servants live downstairs: Mrs. Lipton, the cook; James, a snobbish servant; Henry, the youngest servant, who usually gets clipped behind the ear by James or Mrs. Lipton. The butler Stokes was the last to join the servants, with his daughter Ivy, the maid. He is shady and despises the rich. During WWI, he and James were in the trenches with Teddy and saved his life, so Stokes gets the position of butler upon his arrival at the house. George and Mildred Roper are forced to leave their home in South Kensington (as the landlords in Man About the House (1973)) when they receive a compulsory purchase order from the council. Mildred talks George into buying a nice middle-class house in suburbia, and they move next door to Jeffrey and Ann Fourmile. Unfortunately, Mildred's dream of upward mobility seems doomed to failure, as George relentlessly embarrasses her in every way possible.
