This masterfully crafted, offbeat romantic drama follows the twists and turns in the life of a schoolteacher, Cheenu (Kamalahasan) who rescues a mentally deranged woman Viji (Sridevi) from a brothel and looks after her in his hillside home. While the crazed woman, regressing into a childlike state, becomes devoted to him, he struggles to keep his sexual desire in check. While Viji is leading a blissful existence with Cheenu, with no memory of her past at all, Vijis father Vedachalam (Veeraraghavan), has been desperately seeking her, even posting a newspaper advertisement about his lost daughter. A co-passenger who had travelled with Cheenu and Viji from Chennai to Ooty by train gives him a lead. When Cheenu takes Viji to an Ayurvedic medical practitioner for treatment, the police converge on the location forcing Cheenu to stay away for fear of action against him. Multi-millionaire Bishan Kumar and orphan Kishan are inseparable friends and live in the same house with Bishans widowed mother and a maid servant. Bishan decides to make all arrangements to take Kishan to the city; at first he refuses but later on agrees when Bishan convinces him. In the city Kishan gets to perform in his first singing concert which turns out to be a success rendering Kishan as an over-night star; his life changes when he gets to learn that Bishans uncle and his son, Jagdish has embezzled all the familys assets and money, his wife and son is no longer with him and he had borrowed huge sums of money to fund him as a star. Kishan then decides he will use his musical talents to fund back his friend thus stabling him back to square one but unfortunately Bishan is hold as a hostage by his uncle and Jagdish on a yacht he once owned and is forced into confessing that he had a hand in abducting numerous school children. After years of painstaking research at the cost of his domestic pleasure, Dr. Dipankar Roy discovers a vaccine for leprosy. The news is flashed over television and overnight, an insignificant junior doctor receives international recognition. Professional jealousy and abuse of power threaten Dr. Roy, even as the Secretary of Health reprimands him for breaking the news to the press. He is asked to report to the Director of Health. Professional colleagues Dr. Arijit Sen and Dr. Ramananda invite him to a lecture but it is merely a pretence to humiliate him.
