Brothers Giancarlo and Ernesto Barandero have crossed illegally from Italy into France. Older Giancarlo is the practical protector, while younger Ernesto is the sensitive idealist albeit with an explosive temper. They are eluding the Italian police, as Ernesto killed a man in Genoa in protecting the honor of a woman he didn't even know. The Italian police do suspect the brothers of having crossed the border. Roaming the French countryside, the brothers decide to try and get work as grape pickers during the vintage, eventually being hired by the brusque Louis Morel, along with all Louis' regular Spanish pickers, led by the fiercely loyal Eduardo Uribon. The brothers' hiring is despite it illegal to do so since they have no work cards. Louis operates the vineyard along with his wife Léone, Léone's younger sister Lucienne, a hired hand named Etienne, who has ended up being Lucienne's unofficial fiancé, and Louis' aged Uncle Ton Ton, who used to run the vineyard but has now figuratively been put out to pasture. Léone is largely neglected by Louis as he focuses all his energies on the vineyard. Giancarlo ends up falling for Lucienne, which complicates the brothers' situation as Etienne is on the scene, but what is even more complicated is Ernesto falling for Léone, who, in her caring state can see that Ernesto is a troubled young man who needs some care and affection. The police looking for the brothers, especially Ernesto, may ultimately affect what happens with both Léone and Lucienne. Written by Huggo

Ginger, so named for the color of his hair, is a London window washer who is irresponsible in most aspects of his life. He and his best mate Dwyer, who lives in the room next to his in a shabby rooming house, share everything, including their dates, they often switching rooms in the middle of the night without even telling the young women who are already in their respective beds. Ginger is always on the lookout for his next date, whether it be through the windows he washes or already on a date. It is through one of those windows that he meets elderly Gunge, a patient in a hospital whose unique but well kept and spacious apartment Ginger temporarily moves in to. And it is on one of his dates with another woman - Babette - that he meets Carole and Jill. While he asks Carole out as the seemingly more outgoing of the pair, Ginger is really more interested in Jill, he using Carole to get to Jill. In believing that Jill may be the one, Ginger begins to have a more responsible view of life in general, including treating Jill with a certain respect that he has never shown to another woman. But Ginger does not have the best of role models of respect and commitment in his yet again pregnant sister Cecily and her husband Issurs marriage, Issur who is arguably even more irresponsible in marriage and life than him of which Cecily is aware and accepts. 1935, Paris: David Talbot is a successful and well-respected member of the French Foreign Service. Everything is going his way: he is responsible for handling a large public trust, is pegged as the next French Ambassador to Brazil, and is still in the honeymoon phase of his marriage to his bride, Lucienne. He receives a letter addressed to Jean -- although David Talbot is the addressee on the envelope -- asking for the FF1 million owed. He eventually learns the letter writer accuses him of really being Jean Pelletier, who committed a bank robbery and murder in 1922. Half of the proceeds (FF1 million) is apparently owed to Pelletier's partner(s) in crime. Part of Talbot's background is that he was long ago treated by Dr. Andre Tessier, still a close friend, for amnesia as the result of a physical trauma. The one person who could positively identify him did so as David Talbot, now believed deceased. Two people (wanting the FF1 million loot) clandestinely continue to claim Talbot truly is Pelletier -- they are revealed to be wine merchant Henri Sarrou and cabaret singer Michelle Allaine. Although publicly cleared of the accusation, Talbot goes on a search for the truth. And Lucienne, knowing of the accusation but not knowing of the mounting pressure placed on him by Sarrou and Allaine, cannot help but wonder herself. Written by Huggo
