Vijay (Vijay) is a rich young businessman who is the managing director of a big tea estate in Ooty. His only one aim in life is to have fun and he spends most of his time in partying and flirting with girls. His company suffers a big loss because of his mismanagement. To manage the loss to his company, Vijay invites his father Rajasekar (who is in the United States) to come to India to sign some documents. Rajasekar dies in a plane crash on his way to India. Vijay's maternal uncle (Manivannan) comes up with the idea of having another elderly person to act as Vijay's father for a while until the documents are signed. So they visit a senior home where they meet Selvam (Sivaji Ganesan). They request him to act as Vijay's father and he agrees to it. Selvam and Vijay develop a good working relationship. When Vijay learns that Selvam and his wife Shantha (Saroja Devi) have been living separated for the past 30 years, he strives to resolve their differences and reunite them. Actress Nagma was the first choice for Ramba charector. Later it was replaced by ramba due to call sheet issues. Again after few months Nagma was called to Devayani charector and also in other language movies too. But due to some diplomatic reasons Nagma quit from this evergreen movie.

Industrialist Viswnath's (S.P.Balu) son Vijay (Vijay) comes home after completing his education abroad. Viswanath's personal secretary Radha (Simran) has several problems to deal with - an elder sister deserted by her husband, an unmarried and pregnant younger sister, an unemployed elder brother and she herself has a congenital heart. Vijay, who is used to western culture, has a different background and without any inhibition sits for drinks with his father. He has only one problem i.e. how to blow the riches piled up by his ancestors. Vijay decides to get married on a contract basis and how he achieves this forms the rest of the story.
