“کتابخوان” راجع به دو نسل است: میشل برگ (با بازی رالف فاینس) پسری که در سنین نوجوانی عاشق و همخانه ی زن میانسالی به نام هانا (با بازی کیت وینسلت) میشود و روابط عاشقانه ای که روز به روز بیشتر میشود، ولی پس از چند سال هنگامی که “میشل” در رشته ی حقوق تحصیل میکند، متوجه میشود که عشق قدیمش “هانا”، به جرم جنایات جنگی و عضویت در حزب نازی آلمان در دادگاه کیفری در حال محاکمه است و این مسئله زندگی او را نیز تحت تاثیر قرار میدهد.
