The series is based on the 1936 novel of the same name by Serbian author Mir Jam. Like the novel, the television series is based in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia between the World Wars and centers around the love life of young protagonist Andjelka Bojanic. After marrying a Montenegrin judge, she quickly realizes she has made a mistake. Since she had already lost her virginity during her university years, something looked down upon at the time, her husband--who learns this after marrying her--divorces her quickly. Andjelka relocates to Trebinje for a new job and to get her life back on track. There she meets new people she becomes close with, but her past catches up with her, bringing more drama and heartache. Several interwoven plot lines include Andjelka's childhood friend, Nenad Aleksic, now a pilot, and his family in Belgrade, and how fate ultimately brings him back into her life.

This touching love story is based on the novel by Mir Jam. Successful young lawyer Radmilo is in love with Ljiljana, a beautiful girl from Belgrade whom he hasn't seen for years. She is in love with another man, but when he reveals he isn't willing to marry her, she accepts Radmilo's proposal to spite him. On their wedding night she admits that she loves another and tries to leave, but Radmilo asks her to give him three months to think of a good excuse for them to separate, since he lives in a small place where everyone knows (and talks about) everything.
