In Copenhagen, young pregnant Karoline takes on a position as a wet nurse for an older woman named Dagmar to help support herself. Dagmar operates a clandestine adoption agency under the guise of a candy shop, assisting disadvantaged mothers place their unwanted newborns in foster homes. Karoline grows close to Dagmar, but she is soon faced with the nightmarish reality she unwittingly entered.

Nete is a tough 35-year-old woman who runs her job, husband, and teenage daughter with a firm, efficient hand. When her father suddenly falls seriously ill, she forces a doctor to tell her how much time he has left--and it's not more than 3 weeks. Her father becomes bitter and sullen, but Nete insists that he stay with her family for those few weeks. He moves in and puts even more strain on Nete's family and everyday life. They all try to cope with the situation and remember that you don't argue with a dying man. Three weeks pass by--and become a month. Nete's father's appetite comes back, the doctors start to doubt their prognosis, and Nete has a problem. Space is limited in every possible way. Nete's husband seeks comfort outside of their home, her daughter begins to rebel, and as the relationship between Nete and her father has not been good for years, things are bound to explode. And they do. Nete's marriage unravels, and her father gets worse again and is admitted to hospital. He dies there alone--everything Nete planned went wrong. But in the middle of all the misery, a new Nete emerges. A Nete who can let go of her need to be in control. A woman who is again able to reach out for love.
