August 1922. An American journalist, Jerry Thompson, travels to the Soviet Union and arrives in Azerbaijan. He visits the settlement of Mardakan in Baku. There, he meets an elderly man at a villa Thompson can hardly believe what he hears. Standing before him is Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev, a once-great oil producer, millionaire, and philanthropist who lost all his wealth after the establishment of Soviet rule. Haji recounts his life story to the guest, a journey that saw him rise from a humble mason to an influential oil industrialist. Thompson can hardly believe what he hears. The romantic relationship of the main characters Zaur and Tahmina starts off with passionate affair and leads to many problems in a conservative society. Zaur (Fakhraddin Manafov), who is the son of a prominent and well-to-do professor (Professor Zeynally) falls in love with Tahmina (Meral Konrat), who is a divorced TV anchor admired by many of her colleagues and friends of Zaurs family which causes periodic jealousy on part of Zaur. Zaur is so much in love that he flies to Moscow after Tahmina when shes sent there on an assignment. Zaurs family condemns the relationship and tries to divert Zaur to a family arranged marriage with the daughter (Firangiz) of family friends. Pressure from the society and continuous calls from Zaurs mother (Zarnigar Aghakishiyeva) to Tahmina eventually lead to big problems in their relationship culminating in break up and Tahminas suffering. Zaur listens to the advice of his parents, marries the family friends daughter. Due to heavy drinking, Tahmina experiences problems with her liver and eventually dies during Zaur and Firangizs honeymoon in Istanbul, Turkey. When hes back, his brother-in-law breaks the news to him. Devastated as he is, the final scene of the movie shows Zaur taking out his wifes list of products for grocery shopping and drives on to the market implying the life goes on.
