Alex, a radio-specialist sailor on leave, recovers from a drink-induced blackout with a large sum of money belonging to Edna Bartelli, a B-girl who invited him home to fix her radio. He tries to return the money with the reluctant aid of June Goffe, a sweet but oh-so-tired dance hall girl. They find Edna murdered. Not quite sure he didn't do it himself, Alex and June have four hours in the dead of night to find the real killer before his leave ends. The telephone technician Mal Granger is a gambler and bon vivant. One day, his bookie and friend Chippie Evans introduces him to the crime boss Vince Walters and Granger proposes to expand his illegal bookmaking and gambling business using his technical knowledge of communication. Walters becomes a success and Granger forces him to make him his partner with 20% share. When Walters is killed by a bookie that commits suicide later, Granger becomes the owner of his business. Soon his business attracts the attention of the mafia and the powerful boss Carl Stephans proposes Granger to join his syndicate, with 50% of the profits. Granger accepts the deal and the bookies that do not accept the 20% fees for protection imposed by the syndicate suffer retaliation. The mobster Larry Mason is assigned by the syndicate to work in California with Granger and brings his seductive wife Gail Mason. Granger and Gail fall in love with each other and have a love affair. Granger's accountant Trudy Maxwell finds that Granger has been lured by the syndicate and he complains with Stephans that tells that there are additional costs in his shares. When Larry beats Gail, Granger hires the hitman Gizzi to kill Larry. Meanwhile, the honest Lt. Pete Wright from the Gangster Squad is investigating Granger, in the beginning of his downfall. After a long and hard cattle drive through the Bad Lands, former Confederate officer Chad Morgan and his partners arrive at a rail-head in Missouri where corrupt cattle buyer Brog and his gunfighter partner offer to purchase the Texans' herds for a pitiful sum. Brog knows the cattle are weakened by the long drive from Texas and cannot survive a return drive to Texas. He also knows the Texans are desperate to sell for any amount of money they can settle for. After selling their herds to crooked buyer Brog, the Texans blame their partner Chad Morgan for their misfortune. It was Chad who suggested they sell their herds in Missouri. Heartbroken, Chad splits with his partners. On a rainy night, Chad is refused lodging by embittered Northerners who still see him as a Confederate enemy. He finally finds shelter in a livery stable where he meets Joe Jagger, a likable Yankee who likes the whiskey too much. The two become friends after Chad saves Joe from being lynched by men whose booze Joe was trying to steal. At gunpoint, the two pals make their getaway from the livery stable and into the night. Gangster Frank Olins is to die in the gas chamber much to the dismay of his girlfriend Margot Shelby as he is carrying the secret of the location of $400,000 with him. Margot seduces gangster Jim Vincent to get him to engineer the removal of Olins body from the prison immediately after he dies in the gas chamber. She takes prison doctor Craig away from his nurse/girl friend and gets him to administer an antidote for cyanide gas poisoning. During the removal of Olins body, the hearse driver is killed by Tommy. The revived Olins gives Margot half of a map showing the money location and Vincent, in a fit of jealousy, kills Olins and takes the other half. Because the doctors plates on his car will get them through the police roadblocks, Vincent and Margot take him with them on the money hunt. Written by Les Adams
