Naive Stanley Windrush (Ian Carmichael) returns from the war, his mind set on a successful career in business. Much to his own dismay, he soon finds he has to start from the bottom and work his way up, and also that the management, as well as the trade union, use him as a tool in their fight for power.

Believing he has nothing to lose, Bird resigns his position and withdraws his modest life savings in order to spend his remaining time in a "posh" seaside resort. There he keeps his own counsel about his condition and meets people who live in a world he never imagined could exist. Married with two young children, John Lewis is a financially-struggling full-time librarian and part-time theater critic for the local newspaper in Aberdarcy, Wales. He, however, can't focus on his wife Jean, their children, or work as his mind constantly wanders to others of the opposite sex, especially as one lovely young thing after another enters his view, but he never actually considers committing adultery until wealthy Elizabeth Gruffydd-Williams--Mrs.--enters the library and seems to want to have an affair with him. Her fixation on him extends to a promotion for him, the position which he has thus far placed little effort, which his best friend and colleague, milquetoast Ieuan Jenkins, is working hard behind the scenes to secure himself, and which she implies can be had for John with one word by her prominent husband, councilor Vernon Williams. Entering into a possible affair with Liz is regardless of John's animosity toward local playwright Gareth Probert, a former suitor of Jean's who seems to be waiting in the wings for an opportunity to get her back.
