Paradesi is based on real life incidents that took palace before independence during the 1940s. The film is the screen-adaptation of 'Eriyum Panikadu' a Tamil translation of the 1969 novel Red Tea by Paul Harris Daniel. The film mainly deals with a tea plantation workers in the Madras Presidency during the British Raj. The Film delves into the wretched lives of Tea plantation workers. The Movie realistically depicts the lives of poor carefree villagers who are lured to work in Tea plantation farms and how they are forced to live rest of their lives as slaves with no traces of hope and freedom. Kumbudraen Saamy (Arya) is a skilled thief who cons people for a living. His cross-eyed half-brother Walter Vanangamudi (Vishal Krishna)is not so good at at the same trade. They are born to the same father but to different mothers. The two men quarrel frequently and Saamy often pokes fun at Walter's shortcomings. Highness (GM Kumar) as he is dearly called by the brothers is a local zamindar who enjoy's the company of both Saamy and Walter and takes an affinity toward them and treats them as his own family. Once, a masked Walter breaks into Police Constable Baby's (Janani Iyer) house, but she recognizes the man and thwarts his attempt to rob them. Later they develop a fondness for each other, mostly born out of Walter's childish nature and submission to Baby's persuasiveness. Saamy too develops a relationship with Thenmozhi (Madhu Shalini) who cons him by giving him her fake gold bangles. Actor Surya comes to the village for a fund-raising meeting and Highness asks the actor to watch Walter's performance before he leaves. At first, Walter's antics draw laughter and ridicule from the crowd, but soon they begin to appreciate the honesty of his emotions and Surya shows his appreciation by hugging Walter and wishing him a great future. This incident changes Saamy's opinion of Walter and in an inebriated state he confesses to Highness that he actually likes Walter and that any ill-feelings he has had are totally misplaced. The brothers unite and this makes both Highness and the two mothers happy. Meanwhile, Arya brings Thenmozhi home and tells Higness that he wants to marry her. But Walter interjects and destroys the moment by revealing that Thenmozhi is the daughter of a long-standing enemy of Highness. Saamy is enraged and runs off at the mouth, accusing Highness of using his old grudge to gain control over him and his love. Heart-broken, Highness takes to the bottle. Saamy leaves saying that he cannot let Thenmozhi go just like that. Later, Highness reconciles and permits Saamy to marry Thenmozhi. Now, R.K, a local goon who smuggles cattle to Kerala is busted by Highness and is arrested amongst much media fare. Soon, he returns to rent his wrath upon Highness - kidnapping him from his home at night, RK strips Highness naked and flogs him to unconsciousness. In the morning, Highness is found dead, hanging from a tree by the lake. The brothers are devastated, Saamy rushes to engage R.K in a fist cuff but is brutally beaten down. But Walter returns with a vengeance and bashes R.K to pulp, his emotion running high he beats R.K so badly that the smuggler begs Walter to kill him. Walter has other plans - he ties R.K to Highness's funeral pyre and allows him to burn while still alive. The story is set in a rural area around Madurai, in the village called Parithiyur. Paruthiveeran (Karthi) is a country brash, He is often arrested for petty crimes. His one ambition in life is to gain enough notoriety to be on TV news and to be thrown into Madras Jail. He often bullies Paruthiyur villagers for money, women and fun. He lives with his doting uncle Chevvaazhai (Saravanan) who pampers and accompanies him in every misbehavior to keep him happy. His cousin Muththazhagu (Priyamani) is the daughter of a caste fanatic who is a prominent person in the villages council. Muththazhagu loves him more than her life, but he remains unmoved and keeps her at bay. As a kid, Paruthiveeran saved her from drowning in a well. And she promises to marry him and be by his side forever. She starts loving him passionately against her parents will. In order to delay her marriage with anybody else, she fails herself in school to be in the same grade/class. At times he is violent too. When he understands her true love for him and decides to marry her, the feud between the two families comes in the way. Determined as he is to possess her, he warns her against marrying someone of her parents choice. He even threatens to cut her into pieces. Undeterred by his threats, her parents press ahead with the preparations for her marriage with a man of their choice. Since Muththazhagu is not able to convince her parents, she runs away from home wanting to elope with Paruthiveeran. However, she gets kidnapped and brutally raped, when she is found by Paruthiveeran. Muththazhagu beseeches Paruthiveeran, to cut her into pieces, as she is anyway dying and does not want anybody to find her. Paruthiveeran, on her request hence chops her corpse into pieces, and is walking away, when he is found by Muththazhagus father and other relatives. Jyothi Lingam (Mahesh) is a bright student and son of a mason who leads a happy life in his village near Tirunelveli. One day tragedy strikes as his father, the only earning member of the family, dies in an accident while crossing an unmanned railway gate. Mahesh now has to look after his mother and two sisters. Due to circumstances, he is forced to abandon his studies, even though he comes first in his school in the board exams. Through a canvassing agent, he and his friend Marimuthu, get jobs as sales boys in a textile showroom in Ranganathan Street in Chennai. Mahesh, along with hundreds of others, are employed at the Senthil Murugan Stores run by the big Annachi. On each floor at the textile showroom, there are around 50 to 60 sales boys and girls who work in pitiable conditions from early in the morning to late night, without any rest. He meets Kani (Anjali), a fiery independent girl. The difficult and harrowing times in the store bring them together as they face up to a cruel and lewd store supervisor Karungali (director A Venkatesh), who beats up the boys and molests the girls when they play around during duty hours. As Mahesh says there is no escape from the Jail like atmosphere in the shop where employees are treated more like slave labor in a concentration camp than without any human dignity. Angadi Theru is about how these two survive in a concentration camp like condition and what happens when fate perpetually smiles very cruelly at them.
