Vimal plays Veluthambi, an educated young man who comes to a village as 'Gram Sevak' to teach children so that he gets a certificate, by which he can get a job in a government school. Though hesitant at first, he agrees, as it is his dad's (Bhagyaraj) dream to see his son in a government job. Veluthambi reaches this remote village where everyone including small kids work in brick kiln for livelihood. These illiterate people are taken for a ride by the employers who do not want the kids to be educated. Veluthambi brings about a change in the system due to his humanness work and dedication. How the 'Vaathiyar' to the villagers, achieves it and at what cost forms the rest of the story. The scenes and characters in the village like the running one-up-manship between Vimal and Thambi Ramiah over a maths riddle or the city bred hero not knowing the customs and rituals in a village that brings a smile. Jyothi Lingam (Mahesh) is a bright student and son of a mason who leads a happy life in his village near Tirunelveli. One day tragedy strikes as his father, the only earning member of the family, dies in an accident while crossing an unmanned railway gate. Mahesh now has to look after his mother and two sisters. Due to circumstances, he is forced to abandon his studies, even though he comes first in his school in the board exams. Through a canvassing agent, he and his friend Marimuthu, get jobs as sales boys in a textile showroom in Ranganathan Street in Chennai. Mahesh, along with hundreds of others, are employed at the Senthil Murugan Stores run by the big Annachi. On each floor at the textile showroom, there are around 50 to 60 sales boys and girls who work in pitiable conditions from early in the morning to late night, without any rest. He meets Kani (Anjali), a fiery independent girl. The difficult and harrowing times in the store bring them together as they face up to a cruel and lewd store supervisor Karungali (director A Venkatesh), who beats up the boys and molests the girls when they play around during duty hours. As Mahesh says there is no escape from the Jail like atmosphere in the shop where employees are treated more like slave labor in a concentration camp than without any human dignity. The story is set in a rural area around Madurai, in the village called Parithiyur. Paruthiveeran (Karthi) is a country brash, He is often arrested for petty crimes. His one ambition in life is to gain enough notoriety to be on TV news and to be thrown into Madras Jail. He often bullies Paruthiyur villagers for money, women and fun. He lives with his doting uncle Chevvaazhai (Saravanan) who pampers and accompanies him in every misbehavior to keep him happy. His cousin Muththazhagu (Priyamani) is the daughter of a caste fanatic who is a prominent person in the villages council. Muththazhagu loves him more than her life, but he remains unmoved and keeps her at bay. As a kid, Paruthiveeran saved her from drowning in a well. And she promises to marry him and be by his side forever. She starts loving him passionately against her parents will. In order to delay her marriage with anybody else, she fails herself in school to be in the same grade/class. At times he is violent too. When he understands her true love for him and decides to marry her, the feud between the two families comes in the way. Determined as he is to possess her, he warns her against marrying someone of her parents choice. He even threatens to cut her into pieces. Undeterred by his threats, her parents press ahead with the preparations for her marriage with a man of their choice. Since Muththazhagu is not able to convince her parents, she runs away from home wanting to elope with Paruthiveeran. However, she gets kidnapped and brutally raped, when she is found by Paruthiveeran. Muththazhagu beseeches Paruthiveeran, to cut her into pieces, as she is anyway dying and does not want anybody to find her. Paruthiveeran, on her request hence chops her corpse into pieces, and is walking away, when he is found by Muththazhagus father and other relatives.
